Neruda, an impossible absence', new temporary exhibition at the Museum of Chiclana

Friday, June 23, 2023 - 13:25
The Delegation of Culture has not wanted to miss the opportunity to pay tribute to the famous poet and retakes, for this, an exhibition that already offered from the Museum of Chiclana in 2020 and in the context of February 14.

The exhibition was then entitled "Pablo Neruda and Albertina Rosa. A requited love". A requited love given the written correspondence that both maintained in their youth.

Both coming from the south -from the province of Cautín he, from Arauco she-, the Chileans Albertina and Pablo met on April 18, 1921 when both were studying their first year at the Pedagogical Institute. Frequent walks and conversations led to a relationship that lasted from 1922 to 1932, as attested by the texts -letters and poems, occasional drawings also included- that Neruda sent to the young woman throughout this more or less "reciprocated" love, the great love of the poet's youth, after a first adolescent love with Teresa Vázquez. Both Teresa and Albertina figure -there are several hypotheses- as inspirers of that fundamental work of love poetry "Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair". But beyond these, because ten years and love give together for much, the Museum of Chiclana now offers, under the title "Neruda, the impossible absence", a selection of the 111 texts of Neruda -in a very careful facsimile edition- that she kept throughout his life and that only saw the light -at the will of Albertina Rosa- after his death, which occurred in Santiago in 1989, sixteen years after the death of the poet.

That exhibition of that time is basically the one that now, with a different title and three years later, the Museum offers again to the public as the first Temporary Exhibition of the Summer Season. And the fact is that 2020 was also the year of the pandemic. Two weeks after the opening of the exhibition on Neruda, came the two months of confinement and the exhibition was, consequently, hardly visited.

In view of this, and after further reflection on the matter, the Delegate of Culture suggests an exhibition program under the name of "Repesca" to recover - to the extent possible - Temporary Exhibitions already in the past. This one, for example, for the reasons mentioned above or others for other reasons: its didactic value, a particularly favorable situation, a change of dates that makes possible a different type of public, etc.

With this new Temporary Exhibition we begin the "Repesca" and we start, as we have said, our exhibition offer for this summer in which four new exhibitions will accompany this one on Neruda recently inaugurated. About Neruda and about Albertina Rosa, of course. The echoes of that love live on. The living word of the poet endures. We like it when he speaks because it is as if it were present.

The exhibition will remain open to the public until August 20.
